Singapore Holic Laksa: authentic-ish hawker fare in Harajuku

Whenever I’ve been to a Singaporean restaurant in Japan, I’ve been disappointed. I’ve eaten Chicken Rice and Bah Kut Teh in Akasaka. I slurped on faux Wanton Mee in Omori and let me tell you – I have not been remotely impressed. And just as I was beginning to think that the Japanese can’t do it right, I found Singapore Holic Laksa in Harajuku. A friend of mine told me about this restaurant sometime back, but my cynicism prevented me from walking in each time I walked past. 



But this week, I finally did it. The decor at Singapore Holic Laksa is a bit French-ish hipster-ish – with the pale blues and whites and I’m not sure what… The moment I walked in I felt like I was at a strange beach house someplace trippy.  The menu was also confusing, with all its strange toppings – cheese in laksa?

Err…I don’t think so.

I settled on the classic. There are three sizes to choose from, and I ordered the largest. I paid extra for the Super Hot expecting it to be super mild. The bill came to approximately 1300 yen – drink not included. I think it’s a little steep for a bowl of laksa but I guess being in Harajuku probably inflated the price a fair bit. It’s still too expensive if you ask me. 

After I paid and sat down, I noticed that there’s a little blackboard explaining what laksa is. I noticed something similar at the bah kut teh place I went to in Akasaka. The grammar is terrible, but I guess it’s better than having no explanation. 


And then the laksa arrived.

I took a sip of the soup… and I was transported to… laksaholic heaven.

I was honestly astonished at how delicious, delectable and authentic the whole experience was. If it wasn’t for the strange decor and the hefty price tag, I would have felt like I was back in Singapore. And BTW – the super hot is actually super hot… Truth be told, it was a little too hot for my palate. I should have prudently chosen a less spicy soup – but hey. 


This is the first Tokyo Singaporean restaurant that gets its seal of approval from a local. It’s not exactly like it is back home – but it is pretty damn close.

  1. Ooh it looks good. I have not tried any Singaporean / Malaysian food in Japan. I am particular about how my laksa taste even back in Malaysia. Hope to taste this one of these days. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Yea – it’s the best I’ve found in Japan. Can’t compare to Singapore or Malaysia, but it’s still a good bowl of laksa 🙂

      1. Hi Dipa. I was there yesterday. As you said, it was a good bowl, did not feel out of place. I usually have my laksa with the yellow noodle, so this white thinner one gave a different texture. Thanks for sharing.
