Ace of Pentacles: re-starting an old venture

I’ve been a little bad about updating this blog the last couple of weeks. There are two reasons. Firstly, my day job is keeping me very very busy at the moment. There are a gazillion things going on – things I’m in charge of and things I’m helping out with. And secondly, I’m writing a book. No – this is not the first book I’ve written. I’d say it’s my third. Short stories, poems, love letters and screenplays don’t count.

In my earlier post on the Six of Cups, I mentioned how I actually came up with the idea for this book three years ago – I just never got around to writing it. Oh yes- the bane of every writer’s life: the twin pillars of self-doubt and frustration. But now, I’m ready. And with that, I have to do A LOT of research. Yea – you have to read a lot of books to write a book… Not that I’m complaining.

For the past three years, I buckled down and did what was expected of me. I joined the perennial rat race. I joined the billions of people out there all just working to get by. I made a decent living, paid the bills and even found time to enjoy a few moments in between. Luckily for me, I enjoy my job – but it isn’t my calling. And when you have a calling – its voice is hard to ignore. It calls out to you – whispering, cajoling, gentling reminding you of all that you wanted and all that you have to do to get there.

It’s not a voice that can go away. Even if you want it to.

It’s so easy to get caught up in this daily grind stuff and wake up one day and find that too many years have gone by and your dreams are all dead and that it’s too late to do anything about it. It’s so easy to settle for being a big fish in a small pond. It’s so easy to abandon your own vision and support someone else’s. It’s easy because you never have to take responsibility for yourself or really build something that’s truly yours.

And that’s what the Ace of Pentacles is all about. It’s about the beginnings of leaving behind a legacy that’s truly yours and yours alone. It’s about manifesting your goals and your vision in a very tangible and practical way. It’s about planting that tiny seed in the ground knowing that if you tend to it long enough with the right nutrients, it will become the big beautiful tree that it’s destined to be.

And more than anything – the Ace of Pentacles is about doing something old in a whole new way.

For me – that means one thing and one thing alone. I have a stack of books that require my attention, a story in my heart that’s dying to be written, and a vision that’s mine and mine alone. I have… the Ace of Pentacles.
